What does an app cost in 2026, and how does it get onto the app stores?
In Hungary in 2026, building a simple mobile app typically costs 1 to 8 million HUF, depending on whether a freelancer, a small team or an agency builds it. With user accounts, payments and an admin panel, that rises to 5 to 18 million HUF. Publishing needs an Apple developer account at 99 USD a year and a Google Play account at a one-off 25 USD.12 Apple reviews 90% of submissions within 48 hours.3 This guide is by Tamás Nagy, founder of nstudio.
What does an app cost in 2026?
| Type of app | Freelancer, small team | Agency |
|---|---|---|
| Simple app (a few screens, no accounts) | 0.7 to 2 million HUF | 3 to 8 million HUF |
| Medium app (accounts, payments, admin) | 2 to 5 million HUF | 5 to 18 million HUF |
| Complex app (many integrations, custom backend) | 4 to 8 million HUF | over 10 million HUF |
The ranges summarise prices published in Hungary in 2026. The two columns are two different markets, so don't merge them into one number. The price depends mostly on what the app should do and how experienced the team building it is.
What makes an app more expensive.
The biggest jumps come from four features: a custom backend, user accounts, payments and an admin panel. They mark the line between a simple and a medium app. Other drivers: camera, GPS or Bluetooth, third-party integrations, design depth and developer experience. An app built in Flutter from one shared codebase usually costs less than two separate native apps, because there is one build and one maintenance job instead of two.
What maintenance costs.
In our experience, plan for roughly 10 to 20% of the build cost per year, with servers on top. Maintenance is not optional. Since 28 April 2026 Apple only accepts uploads built with the iOS 26 SDK, and from April 2027 it will need iOS 27.4 Since 31 August 2026 Google Play requires new apps and updates to target Android 16 (API level 36).5 An app nobody updates eventually can't be updated at all.
How long it takes.
A simple app typically takes 2 to 3 months, a first market-ready version (MVP) 3 to 6 months. Store release adds another 1 to 2 weeks. The detailed plan sets the exact schedule, milestone by milestone.
What the stores charge.
| Item | Apple App Store | Google Play |
|---|---|---|
| Developer account | 99 USD a year1 | 25 USD once2 |
| In-app purchase commission, EU | 26% from 1 October 2026, 15% for Small Business Program members6 | from 30 June 2026, new installs 20% plus a 5% billing fee when using Google Play Billing7 |
| Auto-renewing subscriptions, EU | see Apple's EU terms6 | 10% plus 5%7 |
The old "15% / 30%" summary is out of date for EU sales. Hungary is in the EEA, so both new regimes apply to Hungarian publishers.67
How an app gets onto the App Store and Google Play.
- Developer accounts in your name. We recommend an organisation account. Google Play requires personal accounts created after 13 November 2023 to run a closed test with at least 12 testers for at least 14 consecutive days before production; organisation accounts are exempt.8
- A privacy policy and a support link. Apple requires both, and missing ones are a common rejection reason.3
- In-app account deletion. If users can create an account, they must be able to delete it inside the app, not only by email.9
- Tracking permission. If the app tracks users, it must ask through App Tracking Transparency.9
- A demo login for the reviewer, accurate screenshots and no placeholder text. Apple says over 40% of unresolved issues come from guideline 2.1, App Completeness.3
- Apple in-app purchase for digital goods. Subscriptions and premium content must use Apple's in-app purchase, with regional exceptions.9
- Submit and wait for review. Apple reviews at least 50% of submissions in under 24 hours and 90% in under 48.3 Google publishes no average review time.
